Allowed by the 9th Biennale of the 9th art's launch, the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin explores the world of comics, paying a tribute to one of its biggest creators : Jack Kirby (1917-1994), the "king of comics", father of Captain America, Thor, the Four Fantastics, X-Men and the Fourth world among other works.
Diving into Jack Kirby's universe means discovering how the artist successfully brought american comics to another dimension through his art style, framing and narration. Introducing more than 250 original drawings and and collection pieces, the exhibition « The Galaxy of Super Heroes » is trying to enlighten what the "king of comics" and the authors he's associated with brought to the table artistically speaking. Thanks to a chronological and thematic circuit, the exhibition puts an accent on the relationship between Jack Kirby and the other artists of the same time, wether they are co-authors or collaborators (Joe Simon, John Buscema, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, Neal Adams…). It also studies the impact of the Fourth World saga on the aesthetic revolutions of the following decades, especially through its retrievals by Frank Miller, John Byrne, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane or Bruce Timm.
